Why YOU Should Travel Solo as a Woman (At Least Once!)
Be honest: feeling a twinge of envy whenever you see photos of another girl exploring the world?
That—together with your unrequited wanderlust—is already a big clue as to why you should travel solo as a woman.
“But I could never travel solo!”
We’ve ALL thought the same… until we’ve actually done it!
As women, it’s usually because we’re made to feel it’d be reckless and selfish, but these are just harmful female solo travel myths.
You can stay safe when you travel solo as a woman, and it’s not selfish to explore the world on your own.
6 game-changing reasons why you should travel solo as a woman
1. Freedom
Travelling with others is fun, but you have to compromise. A lot.
You might be itching to start exploring whilst everyone else wants to sleep in (or vice versa!).
When you travel solo as a woman, you can literally do anything you want and be more spontaneous.
Maybe you were planning on sightseeing today but, because it’s so sunny, you just want to sunbathe? You won’t ruin anyone’s plans by changing your mind last minute.
2. New Friends
You can certainly meet people when you’re travelling with someone else. Let’s face it, though: it’s less likely because we tend to stick together.
So, another reason why you should travel solo at least once in your life is to make new acquaintances (and memories!) with fellow tourists or locals.
There’s something extremely special about these unforgettable friendships. And, even though you won’t get to hang out regularly (#SadTimes), maybe that’s an excuse to go back and visit that country again?
3. Self-discovery
Another life-changing reason why you should travel solo as a woman is that you’ll have a lot more time to be with yourself, even if you do meet other people.
So, go at your own pace, take the time to think, and really reflect on your experiences. Perhaps you could carry a journal, too.
Either way, female solo travel will help you discover new things about yourself, understanding your priorities. This will especially feel relevant if you’re an incurable people-pleaser and struggle to make time for yourself.
4. Self-confidence
At first, the idea of travelling on your own can feel scary: you will inevitably get into situations that drag you out of your comfort zone.
When you haven’t got anyone else making decisions or solving problems for you, though, that’s when you realise just how much you can do.
(Trust me: figuring out how to get from Shanghai to Beijing with no internet and no Mandarin skills was quite the challenge!)
If you lack confidence in yourself, don’t let this stop you. Instead, see it as yet another empowering reason why you should travel solo as a woman.
5. Greater awareness
How many times have you come back from a trip with friends and gone, “Oh, I didn’t know there was such a cute cafe there! And we’ve walked right past it, apparently”?
When you travel solo, you tend to be focused and present: with fewer distractions, you’ll notice much more, from hidden gems to local customs.
6. Romance
This is not the main reason why you should solo travel as a woman, especially since it’s not guaranteed to happen… but you never know! And it’s certainly more likely than when travelling with others.
In fact, we’ve heard quite a few travel romance stories that would trump Before Sunrise.
So, if you’re single, our advice is: don’t set off expecting a travel romance, but do keep an open mind (and heart).
